The autumn equinox arrives in Copenhagen at 2:05 am on Wednesday 23 September 2026, and it marks the fastest-changing light environment of the year rather than a simple loss of daylight. At Denmark's latitude we lose three to four minutes of daylight per day around the equinox, compared with under thirty seconds per day near the solstices. 

What actually happens at the equinox

At five minutes past two on Wednesday morning, while Denmark sleeps, the sun crosses the celestial equator moving south and the northern half of the planet begins the darker half of its year. The September equinox in Copenhagen falls at 2:05 am on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. Nothing about that night will feel different, and yet the weeks on either side of it are the fastest-changing light environment we pass through all year. 

Why the rate of change matters more than the total

We tend to think of the equinox as a threshold, the day the light runs out, when what actually distinguishes it is speed. At Copenhagen's latitude the length of the day changes fastest around the equinoxes, at roughly three to four minutes per day, while near the solstices it shifts by less than thirty seconds. Across this month alone the day shortens by two hours and eleven minutes, from thirteen hours and fifty-three minutes on the first of September to eleven hours and forty-one minutes on the thirtieth, and the slide continues until the solstice on 21 December 2026, when Copenhagen is down to seven hours and six minutes of daylight.

What this means in practice is that the version of the morning you left the house in three weeks ago no longer exists. Habits built in August, the run before breakfast, the coffee on the balcony, the walk to the station in full light, quietly stop delivering what they used to deliver, and most of us do not notice the substitution until November, when we are tired and cannot say why.

How light sets the body clock

The timing of the answer is what matters. Light received in the hours after we wake pulls the clock earlier, light received in the late evening pushes it later, and the same lamp can therefore be either medicine or interference depending on the hour it is switched on.

Do we sleep differently in winter

A Berlin study led by Aileen Seidler and Dieter Kunz at Charité, published in Frontiers in Neuroscience in 2023, analysed three nights of polysomnography in 188 patients at a neuropsychiatric sleep clinic and found total sleep time up to sixty minutes longer in winter than in summer, though this did not reach statistical significance. The same cohort showed longer REM sleep in winter than in summer and less deep sleep in autumn. 

So we should not claim that winter causes us to need more sleep. What we can say is that objective measures of sleep architecture appear to vary across the year in step with the light, that the subjective experience of wanting more sleep in the dark months is extremely common and is not laziness, and that allowing an extra twenty or thirty minutes in bed between now and February is a reasonable response to a body that is asking for it.

What we do between now and the solstice

The work of the next three months is not to add anything complicated, it is to defend the two signals that are thinning out.

Protect the morning first. Twenty to thirty minutes outdoors within an hour or so of waking, without sunglasses, is the single highest-value habit of the Danish autumn, and it counts on overcast days, which is fortunate, because most of them will be. Where the schedule makes that impossible, the commute and the lunch break become the light appointments, and they deserve to be treated as appointments rather than as whatever is left over.

Hold the wake time steady. As the mornings darken there is a natural drift toward later rising and later nights, and since the light is no longer there to correct the drift, the alarm and the outdoor walk have to do that work instead. Consistency is worth more than duration here.

Then defend the darkness, which is the half we have made hardest for ourselves. From around eight in the evening, bring the light down and bring it low, using lamps at eye level and below rather than overhead fixtures, and warming the colour where you can. 

Finally, pay attention to mood as well as to sleep. Lower energy and a heavier, slower quality to the winter weeks is a familiar experience at this latitude, but a persistent drop in mood, motivation or functioning is worth taking to a doctor rather than managing alone, and morning light therapy is one of the better-evidenced tools available for seasonal patterns of low mood when it is used under guidance.

The gentler reading

There is a version of this season that treats the darkness as something to be survived, and we would rather not offer that one. The equinox is a balance point, not a loss, and the same biology that makes November difficult also makes the light of a February morning feel like an event. What we are really doing over the coming weeks is learning to take the light deliberately, because it will no longer arrive by accident, and to give the evening back the dimness it needs. Both halves are the work. Neither is optional.

Within about an hour of waking, for twenty to thirty minutes, outdoors and without sunglasses. Overcast daylight still delivers many times the light intensity of a bright indoor room.

Is light through a window enough?
Usually not. Window glass and indoor positioning cut intensity substantially, so a few hundred lux indoors is not comparable to one thousand to ten thousand lux outdoors on an overcast day.
