MUUN MK3 has been named a finalist for Danish Design Award 2026.
For generations, the most familiar icons of Danish design have belonged to our waking hours: the chair, the lamp, the table and the objects we reach for throughout the day. We have learned to care deeply about how they are constructed, how they age and how they support everyday life.
But what about the mattress beneath the linen?
It is an object we live with every night, yet it is often discussed in terms of firmness and specifications rather than construction, adaptability and use. At MUUN, we believe it deserves the same attention as the furniture around it.
That belief became the starting point for MK3.
A mattress for a changing body
The body is never static. It moves through the night, shifts between positions, warms and cools, and distributes weight differently across the shoulders and hips. It changes across a lifetime, too.
A new partner brings two different bodies to one surface. Pregnancy changes pressure distribution. So can an injury, a period of training, a change in weight or simply getting older.
Conventional mattresses are often designed as fixed products for needs that do not remain fixed. MK3 takes a different approach.
Its construction can be opened, understood and adjusted by its owner. Three comfort layers can be rearranged into different firmness profiles without tools or a technician. Each side can be configured independently, allowing two people with different preferences to share one mattress without either having to compromise.
The answer is deliberately analogue. The intelligence lies in the physical construction.
Designed to remain useful
Adaptability is not an additional feature applied to MK3. It is part of the design from the beginning.
Below the comfort layers, a system of nested pocket springs responds progressively to pressure. Reinforced edge springs extend the usable sleeping surface to the full perimeter. Individual layers and components can be refreshed or replaced as needs change, without discarding the mattress around them.
This separable construction also changes the relationship between the owner and the product. Rather than treating the mattress as something permanently sealed and eventually replaced in full, MK3 is designed to be maintained, adjusted and kept.
The mattress is produced in Denmark with components developed alongside specialist suppliers in Jutland. Its spring system uses 75% recycled steel, while the structural foundation incorporates Seetex made from upcycled foam waste. The surface uses Outlast fabric to support temperature regulation throughout the night.
A wider idea of Danish design
Recognition does not make an object better. What it can do is open a conversation.
Being named a finalist for Danish Design Award gives us an opportunity to bring the mattress into a wider discussion about material honesty, longevity and use. These are questions Danish design has asked of everyday objects for decades. We believe they matter beneath the linen, too.
MK3 gives physical form to a simple idea: bodies change, so beds should too.
That idea belongs to MUUN’s wider focus on the hours from 9PM to 9AM - the transition into the night, the room we retreat to, the rituals that help us slow down and the way we begin again in the morning.
