MUUN: a Copenhagen based sleep company
Sleep and sexual desire are closely connected - especially for women. According to certified sleep counselor Laura Kanadel, women who get enough sleep tend to have a stronger sex drive. In fact, research shows that just one extra hour of sleep can increase a woman’s libido by 14–15%.
Why Sleep Matters More for Women
“Men often sleep better after sex, but for women, it’s the other way around - adequate sleep is what fuels arousal,” explains Laura. “When women are well-rested, their hormones are more balanced, particularly estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.”
Testosterone plays a key role in sexual desire for women, and it peaks in the morning - right after waking. Therefore more sleep in the morning, means more balanced hormones and a higher sex drive.
Women Typically Need More Sleep - But Often Get Less Than They Need
While men and women both benefit from good sleep, women generally need 20–30 minutes more each night. Unfortunately, many women aren’t getting enough. “Studies show that women are twice as likely as men to report poor sleep,” says Laura.
Why the greater need for sleep? According to Laura, it comes down to three main factors:
-
A More Active Brain: Women’s brains tend to be more complex, constantly conducting multitasking. This can lead to greater mental fatigue.
-
Hormonal Cycles: Women's sleep needs fluctuate with their menstrual cycle. For example, they may require more rest during menstruation - when sex drive is usually at its lowest - and feel more energized and sexually inclined around ovulation.
-
The Mental Load: Women often carry a larger share of invisible, mental responsibilities - organizing family schedules, remembering appointments, managing household logistics - even when they work full-time jobs.
Understanding the Mental Load
The mental load refers to the unseen, constant mental effort involved in managing daily life and home responsibilities. Though men are increasingly involved in domestic duties, studies continue to show that women bear the most part of this invisible work. It’s not just about doing tasks - it’s about thinking, planning, remembering, and organizing them.
This includes remembering birthdays, scheduling doctor visits, signing up kids for activities, or even knowing who prefers what in their lunchbox. All of this adds up to mental fatigue, which increases the need for restorative sleep.
How Touch Helps Both Sleep and Intimacy
Takeaway: Prioritizing quality sleep isn't just good for your health - it could also reignite your libido. Want to improve your sex drive? Start by giving yourself permission to sleep.
Yes, really.
But here’s the catch: most of us aren’t sleeping nearly enough because of hormonal shifts, stress, physical discomfort, and a mile-long mental load, which can leave us exhausted, but still wide awake. And when your body’s running on empty, sex is the last thing on your mind.
