How to create the perfect bedroom for better sleep: 10 simple sleep conditions
  1. Temperature: around 18°C
Aim for roughly 16-20°C, with about 18°C as a useful starting point for most adults. Our core body temperature naturally falls as we prepare for sleep, and an overly warm bedroom can work against this process.

  2. As close to complete darkness as possible
Darkness tells the brain that we should release melatonin. Remove glowing electronics, streetlight leakage and unnecessary bedside lighting. Blackout curtains or an eye mask can make a significant difference as well.

  3. Quiet - and, importantly, consistently quiet
Even sounds that do not fully wake us can fragment sleep or move us into lighter stages. Reduce unpredictable sharp noises; where that is impossible, a stable background sound such as a fan or white noise sounds.

  4. Fresh, well-ventilated air
The bedroom should feel fresh rather than warm, stale or stuffy. Ventilate before bed and pay attention to heat and humidity as well as temperature.

  5. A bed that supports your body comfortably
There is no universally perfect mattress firmness. The right bed should allow you to relax without creating pressure, discomfort or repeated repositioning. Your mattress, pillow and bedding should suit your body and preferred sleeping position, not the other way around.

  6. Breathable, temperature-regulating bedding
Your microclimate inside the bed matters just as much as the room temperature. Bedding should help excess heat and moisture escape rather than trapping them around the body.

  7. Minimal artificial light before and during sleep
Bright evening light and screens can tell the biological clock that it is still daytime. Lower the intensity of light as bedtime approaches and keep the sleeping environment dark.

  8. A visually calm bedroom
Clutter, work equipment, and excessive visual stimulation can make a room feel active rather than restorative. The ideal bedroom signals simplicity, safety and rest.

  9. No unnecessary interruptions
Phones, notifications, pets, televisions, partners, and other disturbances can all fragment sleep. Put the phone on Do Not Disturb, or preferably outside the immediate sleeping area.

  10. A bedroom should associated primarily with sleep
One of the most powerful conditions is psychological: your brain should learn that entering the bedroom means that the day is ending. Avoid turning the bed into an office, kitchen, cinema or scrolling station.
